Hungary's resin market has an annual consumption of approximately 600,000 tons, with an import dependency as high as 78%. China is the second-largest supplier (approx. 18% share), after Germany. In H1 2026, epoxy resin prices are stable-to-weak, demand from architectural coatings and auto parts remains steady, and supply chain resilience is the core concern.

Hungary's domestic resin production capacity is limited, with annual output of about 130,000 tons, far below the roughly 600,000-ton consumption demand. The supply gap is mainly filled by imports. Architectural coatings, auto parts and packaging materials are the three core consumption sectors, together accounting for about 72%.

Hungary's imported resin categories are dominated by epoxy resin, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), which together account for over 60%. Epoxy resin is mainly used for coatings and electronics, while PE/PP target packaging and auto parts.
| Segment | Import Share | Main Application |
|---|---|---|
| Epoxy Resin | approx. 22% | Coatings, electronics, adhesives |
| Polyethylene (PE) | approx. 25% | Packaging, pipes, films |
| Polypropylene (PP) | approx. 18% | Auto parts, containers |
| Polyester/PU, etc. | approx. 35% | Construction, furniture, composites |

Core epoxy resin raw material bisphenol A is priced at about RMB 9,200–9,800/ton in China, and epichlorohydrin at about RMB 7,500–8,000/ton. In Hungary's resin CIF import prices, raw material costs account for around 55–60%, while freight and tariffs make up 15–18%, keeping cost pass-through pressure manageable.
| Raw Material / Intermediate | China Price (RMB/ton) | Hungary CIF Estimate (EUR/ton) |
|---|---|---|
| Bisphenol A | 9,200–9,800 | — (intermediate) |
| Epichlorohydrin | 7,500–8,000 | — (intermediate) |
| Epoxy Resin (finished) | 16,500–17,200 | 2,200–2,450 |

Hungary's 2025 GDP was approximately USD 215 billion, with 1.8% growth. The chemical industry accounts for about 12% of manufacturing value added. EUR/CNY exchange rate is around 7.85. On tariffs, Chinese resins benefit from EU Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) rates, with import duties of 3–6.5% for some categories.

Geopolitical energy cost volatility is the primary risk, and EUR exchange rate fluctuations affect import costs. On the opportunity side, Chinese resins have a notable cost-performance advantage, Hungary's automotive industry expansion brings incremental demand, and the China-Hungary bilateral trade agreement provides policy support for supply chain diversification.
